AOAC China Section Meeting & 2011 Forum of International Food Analytical Science and Standards has been successfully organized in Hai Qing Hotel, Qingdao on Oct 20-21, 2011. The Annual Meeting has been organized by AOAC china section, Certification and Accreditation Administration of China (CNCA) and the Food and Agricultural Products Test Agency of Shandong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (FATA-SDCIQ). More than 350 attendees participated in the meeting, who are representatives coming from General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China (AQSIQ), Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health, Universities, Institutes, State Food and Drug Administration of China (SFDA), EU-JRC-IRMM, USFDA, NMKL, international manufactures and industries.

Opening Ceremony
Dr. Lei Bao, President of AOAC China, Director of Natural Toxin Reference Laboratory of AQSIQ, chaired the opening ceremony on Oct. 20. Firstly, Mr. Zhirong Ge, Counsellor of the State Council of China, The Nation Commissar of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Former Vice Minister, AQSIQ, gave opening remarks. He welcomed guests from all over the world to attend the AOAC China meeting. He said that AOAC has been well-known for providing the methods accepted and recognized by regulatory agencies and organizations worldwide; He encouraged Chinese scientists to participate in AOAC activities and get the latest information and knowledge of analytical technique and methods. Secondly, Mr. Daning Wang, the Deputy General Director of Certification and Accreditation Administration of China, and Mr. Jian’an Zhou, the General Director of Shan Dong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (SDCIQ) gave opening remarks, respectively. They introduced the food safety techniques and development in China. They said, AOAC is a valuable tool to improve performance of food safety analysis and also harmonize the international trade based on scientific solutions. Finally, Dr. Rusell S. Flowers, Past President of AOAC, gave opening address on behalf of AOAC INTERNATIONAL, wished to have more communication and collaboration on food analytical technique between China and AOAC in the future. He also believed that more and more Chinese scientists would join the programs of international standards after this meeting.

Two Main Sessions
Two Main Sessions were held on Oct 20, following Opening Ceremony, one titled Food Safety Issues, Emergencies and Solutions, the other is Method validation, Quality Assurance and Accreditation. 13 scientists, officials and regulators gave their presentations around these topics. Mr. Jiazheng Wang, Deputy Director, Department of Science and Technology Bureau, AQSIQ, introduced “The Investigation and Progress of China Food Safety Detection Technology" to the audience. Mr. Wei Lin, Deputy General Director, Import and Export Food Safety Bureau, AQSIQ, presented the “The System of Import and Export Food Safety Laws and Regulations in China”. Dr. Rusell S. Flowers gave us a report about "Utility of Microbiological Testing for Food Safety Assurance". Ms Xiao-wei Shi, Deputy Director, Department of Technology and Standard Management, CNCA, gave a presentation titled The Industry Standard of Import and Export Food and Inspection in China. Mr. Guofang Pang, Academician, Chinese Academy of Engineering, gave a presentation about “Collaborative Research on AOAC International Standard: Multi-pesticide Residues Determination in Tea". Dr. Mary W. Trucksess, formerly of U.S. Food and Drug Administration, introduced five AOAC validation programs in her presentation titled “Analytical Method Validation”. Dr. Hilde Skar Norli, Secretary General, NMKL, introduced “NMKL” and its validation and quality assurance. Dr. Joerg Stroka, Operating Manager of the European Union Reference Laboratory for Mycotoxins, gave the presentation titled “Method Validation for Mycotoxins- the last or the first step towards “confidence in measurement”? Professor Xiumei Liu, Chinese CDC, gave a presentation titled “Food Safety Issues in Microbiology Fields and Modern Control Techniques”. Dr. Darryl M. Sullivan, Chair of AOAC SPIFAN, introduced AOAC Stakeholder Panel on Infant Formula and Adult Nutritional (SPIFAN) - A Program for Modernization of Nutrient Test Methods. Dr. Paul Zavitsanos, Worldwide Food Segment Manager, Agilent Technologies, gave his presentation titled “Overview of Latest Technology and Applications for Food Safety Developed at Agilent”.

Best Paper Award
AOAC China Section Meeting called for papers around the country. Themes for papers are as following, Food Safety Issues, Emergencies and Solutions, Method validation, Quality Assurance and Accreditation, Analysis of Contaminants and Residues, Microbiological Methods and Gene analysis, Analysis of Natural Toxins, Food Additives, Food Nutrition and Food Allergens. Finally 205 papers were submitted by scientists from industries, governments, universities of China. 20 papers were selected by the Scientific Committee as the Best Paper. On Oct 20, Excellent Paper Award Dinner was chaired by Dr. Lei Bao and Dr. Rusell S. Flowers. Mr. Zhirong Ge, Mr. Daning Wang, Mr. Jian’an Zhou, Mr. Yu-kui Zhang, academician, Chinese Academy of Science, Dr. Mary W. Trucksess and Dr. Joerg Stroka were invited to give prize to the winners.

Four Sub-Sessions
Four sub-sessions were organized on Oct 21, including Analysis of Natural Toxins, chaired by Dr. Lei Bao and Dr. Mary W. Trucksess, Analysis of Contaminants and Residues, by Dr. Perry Wang, from U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Microbiological Methods and Gene analysis, by Dr. Rusell S. Flowers and Dr. Biao Xu, from FATA-SDCIQ, and Food Additives, Food Nutrition and Food Allergens, by professor Hu-wei Liu, from Beijing University and Dr. Darryl Sullivan. There were 30 presentations in these four sub-sessions. Dr. Lei Bao gave a presentation titled "Method Validation and Collaborative Study of AOAC Official Methods: Determination of Aflatoxins in Edible Oils". Dr. Jon Wong, Research Scientist in USFDA, has talked about “Advances and Challenges in Multi-residue Pesticide Analysis of Foods and Agricultural Commodities". Prof. Huwei Liu, Beijing University presented the "Analyzing Food Additives by using Capillary Electrophoresis".

Exhibitions
There were 22 industries from the world attended the Exhibition including Romer Labs, ThermoFisher, SHIMADZU, ABSCIEX, KWINBON, Waters, Eurofins, BD, BIOMERIEUX, COCACOLA, r-biopharm etc. The most advanced instruments, test kits and techniques in the food safety detection fields have been showed in the exhibition.
Feedback
Since China Section was rebuilt in 2009, this is the first annual meeting which was held in China. The participations from all over the world have discussed about the knowledge and information about method needs, development, validation, quality control, in food safety area. The meeting has provided a very good chance for the scientists, regulators and managers from governments, industries, and universities to communicate and collaborate with each other. “The meeting is very well organized. It is the best Section Meeting I have ever seen”, said Dr. Darryl Sullivan, AOAC Board Director, at the Closing Ceremony of China Section Meeting on Oct 21, 2011, Qing Dao, China.
